Midwest Region Free Pick: Oklahoma St. vs. MI

As Michigan senior Zak Irvin analyzed the seventh-seeded Wolverines' Midwest Regional victory on Friday, he had no trouble pointing to the difference-maker - senior point guard Derrick Walton, Jr.

Seventh-seeded MI hit 11 of 16 three-point field goal attempts in the second half after a cold-shooting first to score a 92-91 win over No. 10 Oklahoma State in a Midwest Region first-round game in Indianapolis.

Despite charging down the court several times in the waning seconds and helping close the gap, Evans couldn't will the Cowboys all the way back while playing the fouling game. The Cards got 18 points from Mangok Mathiang while Deng Adel and Quentin Snider each scored 16. "He makes things easier for all of us because he attracts so much attention to himself, which frees up everyone else. He has been on a tear, and I know he is going to continue to do it". A hot shooting performance in the first half of a game against UCLA died away, leading to a blowout. An explosive second half blew the top off Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

"I think you always feel confident when you've won four games in a row", OSU coach Brad Underwood said. "My teammates really helped me throughout the game, but I thought in the end that I was the best guard and we won the game".

Coming off of a Big Ten tournament championship, the Wolverines (25-11) were supposed to be gassed today. He will have surgery for his injury and will be good to go for the start of next season.

There might not be a team playing better right now than MI, and their deadliness from the three-point line is one reason for the win streak. MI was the seven and the Cowboys were the ten seed. At 6-foot-10, he's the tallest rotational player MI has, but doesn't play inside all that much on either end of the court - especially on offense, where he's taken almost as many three-point shots as twos this year. "Once we settled in, we were fine".

"I couldn't be prouder of a group of guys".

At the half MI held a slim 41-40 lead.

The headlining matchup of the day was Walton vs. Oklahoma State's Jawun Evans, and it didn't disappoint.

Michigan: The Wolverines certainly have momentum. Outside of people that might have had Oklahoma State moving on in their bracket, most people seem to be content with the final results of the game.

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Moses Kingsley scored 23 points and Arkansas regrouped down the stretch to overcome Seton Hall in the first round at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Oklahoma State shot 55 percent from the field, MI 52 percent.

It was the last game for Cowboy seniors Phil Forte III and Leyton Hammonds. We had to make shots. A sixth swish, from Walton, gave U-M a 62-61 lead with 12 minutes to play and provided a clear indication of what was in store for the remainder of the game. The NCAA Tournament will start Thursday and the NIT will start with one game Wednesday but most first round games are Thursday.

MI and Oklahoma State battled in a 92-91 thriller, setting the tone for a high-scoring Friday in the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines entered NCAA tournament play averaging the fewest turnovers in the country (9.42 per contest).

Eighth-seeded Miami (21-11) is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance under coach Jim Larranaga, who guided the Hurricanes to the Sweet 16 in their two previous March Madness excursions.
