Middlesbrough boss Steve Agnew forced to seek Jose Mourinho out for handshake

Middlesbrough boss Steve Agnew forced to seek Jose Mourinho out for handshake

Harry Redknapp had a short stint in charge of the Jordan national team past year and was also made Derby's football advisor for Darren Wassell's spell as interim manager.

Stand-in Middlesbrough boss Steve Agnew says that his team "deserved" a draw from their Premier League clash with Manchester United.

"I think I have served my time and this is something I have always wanted to do".

The 51-year-old took charge of Boro for the first time after Aitor Karanka's sacking as they lost 3-1 to Manchester United at the Riverside on Sunday. "It's a club I have a big affection for". They never recovered from the episode last season that led to Karanka being absent from the touchline for Boro's 2-0 defeat at Charlton.

Karanka left Middlesbrough on Thursday, but Gibson insists he didn't sack the Spaniard because he was willing to leave of his own accord.

"I think the second goal is what set us back a little bit", said Agnew. "But in terms of the players, I couldn't be more proud of their fighting spirit".

The win for Manchester United moves them up to fifth in the Premier League heading into the global break.

"But I keep using the word "confident", and I do believe we'll stay in the Premier League".

Although he has been close to Gibson for years, their conversation following Karanka's exit proved brief.

"The players know where we are and what we have to do to get out of the position we are in. He has progressed us and he will have learnt an enormous amount from this experience", Gibson added. One thing I know is how hard Aitor worked at this club, he's a tremendous guy and will go on to better things.

Despite playing a straight bat as he addressed the media for the first time on Friday, Agnew subtly made it clear he is a very different coach to Karanka.

"We're better because of him, I hope he's better because of us, and we'll stay friends, our family will stay friends, we'll meet and have a beer and some dinner".
