Huawei Begins Updating the Mate 9 with Amazon Alexa Support

Huawei has announced that the Amazon Alexa is now available on the Huawei Mate 9 and the company is releasing a software update for the handset.

Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa are now in a showdown over which will be the AI assistant of choice for travelers, according to a Bloomberg report.

Well as it turns out Huawei had some trouble keeping its promise.

The Alexa update will be delivered to Mate 9 users via an over-the-air update later today.

Also, you wont be able to listen to music like you can on the Amazon Echo, nor can you ask it to play movies and shows on a Fire TV device. The move comes not even a week after Amazon updated its Shopping app for iOS to include Alexa, allowing Apple smartphone users access to the assistant even if they don't own an Alexa-enabled Amazon device.

To use Alexa voice commands on Mate 9, users must first initiate the Huawei Alexa app.

Despite being the world's third largest smartphone manufacturer, Huawei has been struggling in the US. Huawei hopes to roll out the feature to other markets as well as other devices as it becomes possible. You'll have a rather large roster of Alexa skills at your disposal, expanding what you can do further. Let's hope that Alexa can expand and provide a unique set of skills for the mobile platform.

The Huawei Mate 9 has four microphones so should be very accurate with Amazon Alexa commands. The Vegas property is expanding the range of functions controlled by Alexa. Since Alexa only has a “home location”, it doesnt keep track of where you are. For that you'll have to rely on the Google Assistant, which will continue to operate side by side with the Mate 9 Alexa app.

Siri has already lost out to Alexa in one competing chain, however: Wynn Resorts has opted for Alexa-powered Echo devices.

Also, when you're sitting at home near an Echo, then load up the Huawei Alexa app and say "Alexa", both your phone and the speaker will start going off.
