Dont'a Hightower leaves Pittsburgh Steelers visit without contract

But now it sounds like Mother Nature might be a New England Patriots fan and will drive a wedge of winter weather between Hightower and the Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are playing hardball with Dont'a Hightower.

The New York Jets clearly are in a rebuilding phase, so it might be a tough sell to get a player like Dont'a Hightower, who is used to winning Super Bowls, to sign as a free agent.

While Hightower probably appreciated the cupcakes, it doesn't appear as if they made a huge impact on him.

This much is certain, it's a little out of character for the Steelers to be pursuing a high-profile (read: pricey) star player like Hightower, arguably the best free agent on the market this spring. The Patriots have won two of the last three Super Bowls with Hightower acting as a stabilizing force in the middle of their front seven. He was at the facility starting no later that 11:47 a.m. Tuesday, according to multiple reports. The former New England Patriots linebacker went through a lot of trouble to make sure this meeting took place, so Hightower must have a lot of interest in the Steelers.

That deal hasn't come to fruition at this point, which leaves the door open for someone to knock Hightower's socks off with another offer. The efforts may be for naught, but it is important that the Jets at least try to sign the linebacker.

The New York Jets obviously have a lot of problems that need fixing, but the linebacker position certainly isn't one of them.

While Bill Belichick has been able to craft defenses without superstar talent, the team just authorized a Stephon Gilmore $13 million-per-year payment. "So Dont'a Hightower's situation is fluid while the Patriots await an answer from him".

For starters, they Jets would weaken the mighty Patriots.
