Alonso Says Honda Has No Power & Reliability

The outlook for Alonso's 2017 season looks bleak after a series of Honda engine issues during pre-season testing have left his McLaren vehicle well off the pace of its rivals.

With eight days of running completed, Alonso managed a total of 190 laps, and Vandoorne 235 - which is a poor showing when compared to Mercedes who completed more than 1000.

With one day of testing remaining, Vandoorne said logging more laps consecutively has to be McLaren's priority. "We have only one problem, which is the power unit", two-time champion Alonso told Sky Sports U.K. The Honda engine has no reliability and no power. From the analysis we can do compared to the other cars, around the corners we don't lose time in nearly all corners, but we're 30/40 km/h down in every single straight. He is satisfied with the way he attacks the corners and he enjoys driving the auto, however, the engine is a big problem and they are 30km/h down on every straight because of it. The laps we complete are quality laps, we're getting to know the vehicle, we find some issues, like the rear brake calliper overheating after 11 laps, or the tear offs going into the radiators and making temperatures go up, meaning you have to put a net on the intake for Australia to prevent that from happening.

"[Analysing] the chassis side is hard because we are not pushing probably the speed that the others are doing because of a lack of power".

"I will not stop racing without a good feeling that I feel I deserve", he said. I'm happy with the balance, I'm happy with how I attack the corner.

Fernando Alonso, who usually tries to remain optimistic no matter what's going on in the auto, came to the end of his tether this week, reportedly saying: "I don't think we are too far back with the chassis". "We are not really in an ideal situation, but we are working hard for the team, our driving style is similar and we both have the same comments about the vehicle, which is good for developing in the right direction".

"We gained some performance in the chassis, but also a little bit in the engine".

"It's always important to do long runs because there's many things you discover by completing a lot of consecutive laps".

Stoffel finished the day on 48 laps, and will hand over the reins to Fernando in the morning for the final day of the test. "The team are all ready to win except Honda".

If you need me, I'll be rooting for Honda at the back of the pack for the rest of the year.

"Let's say that we are not matching our expectations, and we are not as fast as we wanted to be in this winter testing. The full power of our engine won't be seen until we all the problems we are experiencing are sorted".
