Valentina Sampaio is French Vogue's first transgender cover model

The cover of the March issue, which hits stands on February 23, was revealed in an Instagram post by Vogue Paris captioned "This month we are proud to celebrate transgender beauty and how models like Valentina Sampaio, who is posing for her first ever Vogue cover, are changing the face of fashion and deconstructing prejudice". The cover was released this morning, in the middle of New York Fashion Week, where the topic of diversity on the runways continues to be a dominant industry conversation.

French Vogue editor-in-chief Emmanuelle Alt tells American Vogue that they are spotlighting inequities based in gender presentation. (The 29-year-old model has been a regular on the covers of worldwide editions of Vogue for years.) Appearing on the cover of a storied magazine like Vogue continues to be a major triumph for models, especially those who grace multiple editions of the magazine in their career.

The Brazilian stunner, who previously graced the front of Elle in Brazil, appears on the Fashion bible with the caption, "Transgender beauties: How they change the world".

Calling Sampaio the "glam standard-bearer of a cause that is on the march", the French edition of Vogue describes the 22-year-old as a "femme fatale" who happened to be born a boy.

Editor Emmanuelle Alt says she has "beauty striking enough to stun on the cover of Vogue".

Though this kind of visibility is a step forward for both Vogue Paris and the fashion industry, Alt finished her editorial note by reminding readers that there's still a great amount of progress to be made.

Alt writes: "The day when a transsexual poses for a magazine cover and it will be no longer necessary to write an editorial on the subject, we will know that the fight has been won".
