Trump tells Ukraine leader he'll work to "restore peace" with Russian Federation

"Ukraine demands Russian Federation immediately cease firing", spokesman Svyatoslav Tsegolko said in a post on Facebook.

Worldwide monitors issued a sharp call for both sides to cease the fighting. The rebels responded by claiming Ukrainian shelling killed two civilians in the town of Donetsk.

'There is no lighting in the city and we are keeping the local heating plant at the lowest temperature possible that would avoid its pipes from freezing, ' she said.

Each side blamed the other for the upsurge of violence, but the Ukrainian military says its troops have gained some ground. We have seen them in Yasynovata.

Ukraine accused pro-Russian separatists of aggression.

Trump's open admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and campaign pledge to mend ties with Moscow have raised questions over his administration's commitment to maintaining sanctions against Russia for its involvement in the fighting and annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

The call between Poroshenko and Trump, scheduled for 2145 GMT, will be the first since the US president's inauguration and its outcome will be closely scrutinized for signals on Trump's policy on Russian Federation. Ukrainian president's first conversation with the new U.S. leader, whose aim to improve relations with the Kremlin has alarmed Kiev while the almost three-year-old conflict remains unresolved.

A signal that the USA was standing by its pre-Trump position came when the new US ambassador to the United Nations used her first speech to the UN Security Council to pledge that sanctions will be maintained.

But the new American envoy tempered her criticism, saying it was "unfortunate" that she had to condemn Russian Federation in her first appearance at the U.N. Security Council.

Since coming into office he has twice discussed dropping sanctions for issues unrelated to Ukraine.

Moscow has applauded Trump's promises to rebuild U.S.

He noted that Trump's new Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense James Mattis both advocated during their confirmation hearings for providing Ukraine with weapons to defend its sovereign territory. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg appealed to Russian Federation to exert its influence over the rebels and to request a return to the ceasefire.

The Kremlin, in turn, has urged the West to persuade Ukraine to abide by the peace deal.

The Ukrainian military reported another six soldiers dead on Friday, raising the number of military casualties to at least 16 over the past week. Eight houses and two high schools were damaged in shelling Thursday night.

Thursday morning began with echoes of rocket fire on the blue-collar town's outskirts and the death of a woman in a shelling attack. The plant is crucial for the clean water supply on both sides of the conflict.

"Moscow puts Avdiivka on the brink of humanitarian disaster - cruelly and ruthlessly".

'Three men were also injured, ' pro-Kiev Donetsk regional police chief Vyacheslav Abroskin wrote on Facebook.
