Mitsubishi teases Eclipse Cross SUV

The Eclipse Cross is a four-door crossover meant to slot in between the Outlander and the Outlander Sport models in Mitsu's SUV-heavy lineup. The brand is hoping to recapture buyers' interest with the introduction of a fashion-forward crossover.

The new crossover will officially debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Mitsubishi is keen to highlight the Eclipse Cross is "coupe-like" with "highly chamfered contours" and a "distinctive V-line in the rear quarter".

The Qashqai's £18,500 starting price is the one to watch though, and Mitsubishi has a fairly clear target at which to pitch its Eclipse Cross. The new model highlights the Japanese auto maker's strategy to move away from passenger cars and towards an SUV-centric model range.

It's believed that the new Eclipse Cross SUV will take some inspiration from the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV concept, which was previously shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show.

What the images do reveal is that the new 2017 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV will have a rather large roof spoiler and a one-piece taillight.

In a short statement, Mitsubishi said: "Eclipse derives its name from the MMC's popular specialty coupe model sold in the US from 1989, while Cross is short for crossover".

Industry sources suggest that the Eclipse Cross will go on sale with a choice of 2.2-litre diesel and 1.5-litre turbo petrol engines, and front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive transmissions.
