Makes sense. These companies are paying up to $5 million for 30 seconds of advertising time to the Fox network for space in a game that is often the most-watched TV event of the year. But watching the "ghost" lead a schlubby guy to realize the value of friendship through beer is kinda entertaining - and pretty much the spirit of a lot of Super Bowl revelry.

84 Lumber, a Pennsylvania-based building materials supplier, originally meant to air a Super Bowl commercial featuring a Spanish-speaking woman and girl who are fleeing their home country.

Google will be advertising Home, its virtual assistant home appliance.

Website hosting and development platform Wix will air an action-themed spot starring actors Jason Statham and Gal Gadot.

The Super Bowl is the time of year when consumers are most interested in advertising, says Susie Rossick, assistant vice president of regional media and marketing for American Honda Motor Co, which chose to book a TV slot this year.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has appealed to the Canadian government and the CRTC to sustain the policy of substituting Canadian ads for U.S. commercials during the Super Bowl. The soldiers' reactions will be filmed throughout the game as it's broadcast, with the footage being edited and played on national television right after the fourth quarter ends.

This is the granddaddy of Super Bowl commercials.

Recent Super Bowls have been watched by between 110 and 115 million people each year. While the decision leaves "simsub" intact for other high-profile events, the Super Bowl is a huge ratings draw in Canada: previous year, an average of 8.3 million viewers tuned in to the game on CTV and RDS.

The only viewers not affected by simultaneous substitution are those still picking up over-the-air signals, who have always been able to watch US feeds uninterrupted, if they are close enough to the border. "Despite a 30-second slot costing a staggering £3.9 million, up from £3.8 million a year ago, many brands look to spend an additional quarter of their investment on marketing their ad to ensure that its seen as widely as possible".

In an attempt to mitigate what the company is projecting as "significant" losses and tempt viewers into watching the game on their Canadian network, Bell Media is broadcasting the game on three of its channels, offering prizes - including a vehicle - to viewers, and sending Canadian fans to a website where they can watch all the "best new" and "fan favourite" American ads.

For mainstream viewers, ads like Apple's "1984" (1984), Budweiser's "Frogs" (1995) and Old Spice's "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" (2010) have been far more memorable than the big games. For Super Bowls, the breakdown is 53 percent male to 47 percent female.

While you may be eating guacamole or other avocado-filled snacks during the game, watch out for an Avocados from Mexico commercial. In 2006, the average cost of a 30-second ad was around $2.5 million.
