Red Cross: Urgent Call for Blood, Platelet Donations

Almost 100 blood drives were forced to cancel in December, resulting in more than 3,100 blood donations going uncollected.

In November and December there was a decrease in donations nationwide leading the American Red Cross to issue an emergency call for blood donations.

"This time of year we have a great need for all blood types".

"In about an hour, you can help save someone's life", Barraza said.

According to Red Cross officials say that every two seconds someone in the USA needs blood and to prevent a delay in care they are asking for your help. Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help speed up the donation process. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

The Greater Ozarks and Arkansas Blood Services Region was also short on donations, receiving almost 1,000 fewer than expected.

Along with the busy that comes with the holidays, the winter season offers its own hurdles for those considering giving blood. "During our normal blood drives, we try to keep extended hours to give people a broader opportunity to come out and donate".

Close to 14,000 blood and platelet donations must be collected daily for patients across 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country.
