MS Dhoni vs Virat Kohli in ODIs and T20 Internationals since 2014

He went onto captain his country in their ICC Champions Trophy success in 2013, becoming the first global captain to win all three limited-overs trophies. He won the first edition of ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, then helped India break almost three-decade long 50-overs World Cup curse in 2011.

While quitting captaincy, Dhoni has remained available as a player for selection in the Indian ODI and T20 teams. MS Dhoni has led India with command and authority in the last 10 years or so and to see him go leave the captaincy without any prior indication brought all the fans together in hailing India's most successful limited-overs captain. Dhoni pointed towards his as well as Gautam Gambhir's running between the wickets, which could help convert singles into doubles and rotate the strike as one of the main reasons. This also means that for the first time since late 2008, India's former skipper will only be playing as a keeper-batsman, across formats, "Dhoni's presence will help Kohli as he now captains across three formats".

Having made his worldwide debut in 2004, Dhoni eventually became the ODI captain, succeeding Rahul Dravid when he relinquished the post, and then ascended to full-time Test captain once Anil Kumble retired. "I don't think it really is a surprise, but it's come a bit early".

The biggest takeaway from Dhoni's shock decision is he cares more about the team than himself. They start with a three-match ODI and T20 series against England. Dhoni has made team India number one in tests, won us the ICC Cricket ODI World Cup and the ICC Cricket T20 World Cup.

Most sports experts and brand managers ETspoke to were of the opinion that if one removes the captain from "Captain Cool", what remains is just another cricket star with a good legacy.

This announcement should simply be seen as Dhoni's step down from the post as captain- another act of flawless timing from this masterclass.

As a captain, he took some harsh decisions. In the year 2014, he did the same with his test retirement after an Australian series after which Virat Kohli was chosen to be the test captain to the Team India. 2007 saw Dhoni captaining a young, and arguably unprepared team for the inaugural T20 World Cup.
