Matt Millen on 49ers hiring of new GM John Lynch: 'Good luck'

However, 49ers' CEO Jed York believes that this time, San Francisco is headed in the correct direction due to their willingness to try new things.

After a really long wait for the San Francisco 49ers to make their hire at general manager, they dropped a bomb late Sunday night with their hiring of John Lynch. And even though he played most of his career (10 seasons) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Lynch's perennial finalist status and potential Hall selection likely would not be as viable without closing his career with four consecutive Pro Bowl selections after joining the Broncos in 2004.

Lynch, a 16-year veteran of the National Football League and Hall of Fame candidate, was reported as the Niners' next GM Sunday evening.

Lynch replaces Trent Baalke who was sacked New Year's Day along with head coach Chip Kelly. He joined the Fox broadcast team later that fall and has served as color analyst for play-by-play announcers Chris Rose and, most recently, Kevin Burkhardt. Setting aside the fact that Shanahan effectively hired Lynch, it's still worth going back through those words for some context to their relationship.

Not to say he can't do the job, we'll see.

"When I heard the news, good luck", Millen told the Free Press today. Lynch and Shanahan are tied together by the latter's father and former Super Bowl winning head coach, Mike Shanahan. Like Lynch, Millen also did work on television after his National Football League career. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network further reported Lynch would not go through the process, and take the job, unless it remained a secret.

"You know, Kyle, I think he goes in these production, er, excuse me, interviews and maybe comes off a little confident, a little arrogant", Lynch said, referring to interviews broadcasters carry out with coaches before games. Will there be a change of culture in San Francisco?

The 49ers are prohibited from officially hiring Shanahan as head coach until after the Falcons finish their season in Super Bowl 51 against the New England Patriots on February 5 in Houston. The things that are factors are, can you manage people?
