Israel declares Arrow-3 operational

The Arrow 3 is a highly maneuverable system created to intercept ballistic missiles when they are still outside the Earth's atmosphere and is considered one of the world's best interceptors due to its breakthrough technological capabilities. It was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries together with US aviation giant Boeing.

After years of development and testing, the system is now considered operational, though it will continue to undergo checks and improvements, the ministry said.

Under development since 2008, the Arrow-3 achieved an initial exoatmospheric intercept test success in December 2015.

In salvo scenarios, Arrow-3 will be able to shoot twice against a single target, assess for battle damage and, if needed, divert to other approaching threats, program officials here say.

Arrow-3 was delivered to the Israeli Air Force Wednesday morning, joining the Iron Dome, the Arrow-2 and David's Sling. The as-yet-to be deployed David's Sling is created to intercept medium-range missiles. The IAF Air Defense System Commander stated that this system will give Israel more effective and substantial abilities in order to defend Israel. -Gen. Tzvika Haimovich, head of the army's Aerial Defense Command.

"The Arrow-3 interceptor is a world-class missile that, together with the Arrow-2, expands the defence envelope provided to the state of Israel", the Israeli Ministry of Defense said in a statement. Additionally, radar detection systems were upgraded to cope against future threats in the region. An additional advantage of the exo-atmospheric Arrow 3 is the reduction of the risk of being hit by pieces of a missile, or of being exposed to biological, chemical or radioactive materials.
