In Focus: Jese has potential to keep Boro up

Middlesbrough have agreed a deal with PSG to sign striker Jese Rodriguez on a six-month loan - with the move now left up to the player. He is a player we like and I like.

It is likely that Ramirez will leave if the champions increase their bid to nearer £15m, and Karanka is chasing Jese and Hull City's Robert Snodgrass as potential replacements.

With Gaston Ramirez having recently handed in his transfer request, it is more crucial than ever for Middlesbrough to seal the deal with a talented forward like Jese. He got back in the national team after playing with us.

Karanka was unhappy with the crowd baying for his players to change tactics in the dying seconds of the defeat, describing the atmosphere at the Riverside as "awful", and claimed his side "deserve more respect" from their supporters.

José Mourinho's former assistant at Real Madrid believes the problem lies with fans who have started attending games since last spring's promotion and have failed to understand his philosophy.

"It's a stress fracture in his foot", said Karanka. "He knows this step is really important so he has to be sure". "I had an unbelievable dinner with the chairman and his partner, both are my friends", he said.

"Now in the Premier League, we have fewer games than we had in the Championship". He's a Champions League player, a young player with an unbelievable future in front of him. They told me I was completely right. 'It's obvious. But he's a player we like, we are trying to bring him here.

Asked about other possibly transfer targets before the January transfer window ends in five days' time, Karanka added that remained optimistic over further incomings.
