Westner was a two-time European Tour victor, claiming the 1993 Dubai Desert Classic and the 1996 FNB Players Championship.

Former Dubai Desert Classic victor Wayne Westner died on Wednesday after he "shot himself in front of his wife" in South Africa, a police spokesman has confirmed.

Westner, 55, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head and a pistol next to his body at the home of his estranged wife in Pennington, south of Durban.

Westner won the South African Open in 1988 and 1991 and the 1996 World Cup of Golf with Els as his partner.

The police's Thulani Zwane says an inquest docket has been opened.

"He allegedly wanted to see his wife and thereafter he allegedly shot himself", South African Police Service Lieutenant Colonel Thulane Zwane told Eyewitness News.

His career was cut short by injury in 1998.
