Could Marco Rubio Actually Bring Down Rex Tillerson's Nomination?

Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the second day of confirmation hearings and expressed some areas of disagreement with President-elect Donald Trump - whose Cabinet picks still need congressional approval. The former Exxon Mobil CEO, who spent virtually his entire career at the company, would if confirmed succeed Secretary of State John Kerry, a long-time advocate of global climate action who helped negotiate the Paris deal.

TILLERSON: Yes. Yes, the - if - and all I've read is again, the unclassified portions, but it is troubling, and if - and if there is additional information that indicates the level of interference, it deserves a response. "These people are dead".

In an exchange with Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky during his confirmation hearing, former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson noted that leadership change in places like Iraq and Libya did not achieve the security goals of the U.S.in the Middle East.

"I abhor the Klan and its hateful ideology", Sessions said. Benjamin L. Cardin of Maryland, the committee's top Democrat.

Day one of Rex Tillerson's Senate confirmation hearings to become Secretary of State started this past Wednesday, and there was no doubt it was going to be hard to convince Democrats and Republicans alike to move forward with his nomination.

American Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) told Tillerson that President Rodrigo Duterte himself "brags" about the killings of drug suspects in the country.

Gates, who has known Tillerson for years as fellow Boy Scouts of America board members, said Tillerson was "the right person at the right time" to stand up to Russian Federation.

"Giving the executive the tool is one thing, requiring the executive to use it without any other considerations", Tillesron said. Rubio has potential to scuttle Tillerson's nomination but it remains to be seen if he will go that far to cross President-elect Donald Trump.

Tillerson as Secretary of State would virtually guarantee an oil rush in the Russian Arctic - oil that's only accessible due to climate change in the first place.

Mr Tillerson, who was interrupted at one stage by a protester, is being grilled on his appointment by the USA senate. "I voted for all of [President Barack] Obama's Cabinet officials. I would want to be fully informed before advising the president".

Take, for example, Russia, the same country that U.S. intelligence officials have identified as hacking into our elections.

"How do you deter cyberattacks against the US if you send a message you can get away with it ... with no sanctions?"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was also troubled by Tillerson's ties to Russian Federation, as well as his failing to support sanctions against the country. Tim Kaine, D-Va., that he was hopeful of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, although he said there were many factors outside his control that contributed to instability in the region.

But he said disagreements with China did not mean that "productive partnership" could not be pursued on other matters.
