BBC's The Real Housewives of Isis comedy sketch divides public opinion

BBC's The Real Housewives of Isis comedy sketch divides public opinion

The clip, which is doing the rounds on Twitter pokes fun at the 'ISIS housewives' who are seen wearing and comparing suicide vests, complaining about having to compete with 40 virgins and using social media hashtags like #DeathToTheWest.

The scene shows one of the girls recording two others as they try on bulletproof vests, to post on Instagram.

"Ahmed surprised me with it yesterday", the woman says. "She knew I had that jacket".

It was shown on BBC2's comedy show Revolting, and it has sparked some differing views.

The creators of the show, Heydon Prowse and Jolyon Rubinstein, have indicated they wanted to use comedy to tackle extremism, but given that the abuse and enslavement of women is central to the group's ideology, making gender the butt of the joke - while playing on the same exhausted reality-TV tropes we've seen so many times before - feels a lot more like punching down than holding truth to power.

"So the BBC has aired a "comedy" sketch in a show titled "Real Housewives of Isis".

"Bad taste, not amusing at all", responded Anna Butcher on Tuesday night. "I need to make it clear that on no basis this even satire", one woman tweeted, adding: "BBC airing a show based on a terrorist group who has killed and continues to oppress and kill those in the Middle East is not comedy material".

Tens of thousands of comments on BBC Two's Facebook page ranged from people hailing its courage to others who deemed it revolting.

"FINALLY! BBC develops a backbone (and a sense of humour) about Isis", another wrote.

The clip has been viewed more than 18 million times on Facebook and commented on almost 80,000 times with opinion divided on the BBC's taste for airing it.
