Auburn Hires Chip Lindsey As Its New Offensive Coordinator

Malzahn quote:"I just felt like I needed to find somebody that could develop and evaluate quarterbacks. But I think a few new wrinkles and a little different personality on it maybe will lead to a lot of success". "I have a lot of confidence in him and I'm very excited Chip Lindsey is our offensive coordinator". Auburn's offenses under Malzahn and Lashlee have been some of the most run-heavy in college football over the past four years, passing on just 28.6, 36.5, 34.8 and 32.8 percent of its plays from 2013 to 2016, respectively.

"At the end of the day we want to be a run, play-action team", Lindsey said. "The fact that it's our biggest recruiting weekend, and the fact that Chip's going to get a chance to meet them face to face". "This is going to be his responsibility".

"That's something that he and I talked about at length", Lindsey said.

Don't think White is going to just hand over the starting job either. And one way he did that was to put it succinctly.

The clipboard filled with plays he's carried with him on the sideline for years has been "retired".

Lindsey described how important it was to him that Malzahn would relinquish play calling duties to him.

"He has his own offense that he's been very successful with", Malzahn said. I'm very excited about next year. This is my responsibility. "I'm looking forward to getting started".

According to a Saturday morning report from Brett McMurphy of ESPN, the Auburn Tigers' football program has found their next offensive coordinator.

And oh yeah, Auburn hired an offensive coordinator.

Under Lindsey's direction, the Southern Miss offense broke five major offensive single-season school records in 2015, including completions (312), passing yards (4,263), total offensive yards (6,758), touchdowns (67) and points (528), as they recorded nine wins, a Conference USA West Division title, and a berth in the Zaxby's Heart of Dallas Bowl against the University of Washington. Among the reported candidates that weren't hired, Mark Helfrich had coached a Heisman Trophy victor, Noel Mazzone led an offense from a Power 5 conference graduate, Mike Yurcich was one of only two from a Power 5 conference to produce a 4,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver this past season. "We need to throw the ball more effectively". "We need to be more balanced". Upon leaving the Tigers the first time around, he became both the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern Miss.

Lindsey returns to Auburn after spending the 2013 season on the Plains as an offensive analyst. The Madison, Alabama, native spent a year as the quarterbacks coach at Troy in 2010 on top of more than a decade coaching in the state as a high school level.

For Malzahn and the Auburn administration, who he said were "all on the same page" in the hire, the mood appears to be optimistic about what could be in store for the program in 2017. "And I think we did a nice job in the last two places I've been of kind of meshing some things together".

Although Lindsey will get to implement his own offense, wholesale changes should not be expected for the Tigers on that side of the ball next season.
