At least 13 killed as Indian train derails

Video footage from the scene showed members of the disaster management team and locals trying to rescue trapped passengers from windows and debris using phones to provide light.

The derailment happened in a part of the country where Maoist rebels have been operating.

The accident came only two months after almost 150 people were killed in a similar disaster, highlighting the poor state of the rail network, which is one of the world's largest. Buses were provided for the relief of stranded passengers to carry them to various nearby places like Brahmapur, Bhawanipatna, and so on. The Railway Minister also said that the incident would be probed into to find out if there is any foul play involved in it.

"The Railway Ministry is monitoring the situation very closely and is working to ensure quick rescue and relief operations", he said.

This amount would be in addition to the Rs 2 lakh ex gratia announced by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, the Chief Minister announced on Twitter. The train was enroute to Odisha's capital city Bhubaneswar from Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh.

The Commissioner Railway Safety will conduct a detailed inquiry into the train mishap and submit the report at the earliest, Railway spokesperson Anil Saxena said. Majority have been shifted to hospitals at Parbatipuram and Rayagada. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has pledged to invest US$137 billion (S$196 billion) over five years to modernise the crumbling railways, making them safer and faster.

The Andhra government has announced Rs500,000 each for the next of kin of the dead. The incident took place around 11 PM when the train was going to Bhubaneswar.

The train passes through part of north coastal Andhra before re-entering Odisha.

A special train with 13 coaches left with the stranded passengers of the train from Kuneru to Bhubaneswar via Rayagada-Titilagarh-Sambalpur-Angul. The train accident killed around 60 people and injured 80.
