Five people were killed and eight people were sent to hospital when the gunman opened fire just before 1 Terminal 2 of Fort Lauderdale - Hollywood International Airport.

The suspect who opened fire in a Fort Lauderdale airport was a passenger on a Canadian flight with a checked bag that held a gun, the Associated Press reports. Sheriff's officials said although they believe there was only one gunman, authorities searched a parking structure and other areas of the airport to secure the location after unconfirmed reports of more shots fired. Lauderdale or Miami International Airport would be entitled to reschedule their itineraries without penalty through select dates due to the shooting. The shooting broke out around noon next to the baggage claim area at Terminal 2, which serves Delta Airlines.

"He was a lone shooter and we have no evidence at this time that he was acting with anyone else", she said.

Aerial photos from local news stations showed passengers standing outside on the airport's tarmac.

The FAA said at 3 p.m., "Flights are not arriving or departing from Ft". Donald Trump tweeted about the incident, saying, "Thoughts and prayers for all".

'All seems calm now but the police aren't letting anyone out of the airport - at least not the area where I am, ' Fleischer wrote. "Stay safe!" he wrote on Twitter.

A statement from a Florida official Friday afternoon said that the shooter had travelled to Fort Lauderdale on an Air Canada flight.
