Karuna Nundy: No tolerance for violence against women

Swedish Ambassador Lena Nordstrom, the Deputy Country Representative and Officer-in-Charge of the UN Women Liberia, Peterson Magoola and other members of the diplomatic corps pledged their support to invest and mobilize to end violence against women in Liberia.

The root cause of the violence that never seems to stop against women in Bangladesh, is patriarchy, and we need to abolish this idea.

This year, the campaign is themed "Count me in: together moving a non-violent South Africa forward".

"While progress has been made over the last four decades towards recognising and addressing the injustice of gender inequality and violence against women and girls, it is unacceptable that in 2016 one in three women still experience some form of violence in their lifetime".

The onset of the 20-month long crisis has displaced large populations with an estimated 52 percent of them being women, and placed almost 3 million women and girls at risk of gender-based violence across the country.

Perhaps the most worrying of all are the responses received by the survey from the 60.8 percent of respondents who said "no" - when asked, "Do you think the victims of violence trust the authorities who deal with the issue".

This year marks the 25th year of the 16 Days of Activism and the 15th commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against gender violence campaign in Liberia. We can begin to bend the curve down and bring the scourge of violence against women and girls to an end.

The campaign makes clear that violence against women and girls is a human rights issue-and that everyone can and must act to end it.

We know that this violence is not inevitable - we can prevent it.

"We are going to start with national dialogues, but those dialogues will take the shape of going to communities to talk to communities", she said.

The event coincided with National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children which is marked on November 25.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence has been endorsed by Serbian cabinet minister, Zorana Mihajlovic.

The report also shows that most of the women who were murdered were stabbed or strangled.

"We must love one another, embrace one another as communities".
