Final Push For Christmas Kettle Donations

The Salvation Army band did play in the mall on November 18, when the Christmas Kettle campaign kicked off, but that was before the organization realized it was not supposed to have music there.

The Red Kettle campaign will also contribute to a new effort the Simeroths hope to launch next year. The coin is estimated to be worth $1,200.

Major Elijah Kahn says, "This season has been hard, because we are running below are target. This time of the year many turn to the Salvation Army for assistance and we rely on our friends in the community to support us, to help us".

McCormick says they have a few people signed up but not enough. It gets the public excited too.

"If people don't ring the bell customers going into stores just walk on by", Summers said.

The sound of bells signals that The Salvation Army Kettle Campaign is once again in full swing.

Mrs. McNeil said she is at a loss to know the reason why collections are lagging.

"I was out yesterday (Thursday) for about three hours. that was a cold day but still people stopped and gave even at that level of cold", he said.

She's been inspired herself to donate a coin from the Franklin Mint to the charity. "That is all I do", said Pender. "It's an exciting job". Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum showed up to thank the many Salvation Army staff and volunteers. She was staying at the Macomb's Answer to Temporary Shelter run by the Salvation Army when she first saw the classified ad looking for bell ringers to work for the charity. "I've been doing it ever since".

Last year, the Salvation Army raised $308,000 through it's red kettle drive and provide food, clothing and gifts for 4,000 households in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. "It makes Christmas come alive". "They go all out", she said. We got our gold coin!' and the room just got really excited.

"It's been a lot of fun", Keener said. In their own way, both of them learned that there is value in giving and that there is no better feeling than giving without any expectation of receiving anything in return.

The Salvation Army is an worldwide Christian organization that began its work in Canada in 1882 and has grown to become one of the largest direct providers of social services in the country.
