Bucs RB Martin suspended, entering drug treatment facility

Martin, a Pro Bowl performer last season, was a healthy inactive for the Buccaneers' Week 16 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The decision came as a shock to Bucs fans before the game and was explained during a pregame radio interview as a "coach's decision" by general manager, Jason Licht. Martin has been suspended for four games for violating the league's substance abuse policy, and he is starting the suspension immediately to enter rehab.

The end of Martin's season has been freaky.

Tampa Bay heads into Week 17 needing a miracle in order to make the playoffs.

Martin was benched for Saturday's game, with backup Jacquizz Rodgers getting the nod instead and rushing for 63 yards on 15 carries.

"I know we got a great franchise running back in Doug Martin", Winston said Wednesday, via People can say whatever they want about what Doug would have been. After rushing for 1,402 yards previous year - second-most in the league - with six rushing touchdowns and a receiving touchdown, Martin's 4.9 yards per carry has fallen to 2.9 in 2016. "I'm not anxious about his situation". While neither the Bucs nor Martin are obligated to touch on the nature of his "personal issues", the running back is an unlikely candidate to be jettisoned due to the five-year, $35.75 million deal he inked in the offseason.

The answer was provided later in the day by Martin, via a statement on the Bucs' website. "I can't speak on that". We've got a lot of players that weren't able to play for us this year, whether it was an injury or a coach's decision. "But everything that's beyond my reach, I can't control".
