2 high school students killed in Falmouth crash

One Falmouth High School student has been killed and another seriously injured in a auto crash.

The 17-year-old driver, James Lavin, died at the scene.

The two left hockey practice Thursday evening and half an hour later the vehicle they were in left Thomas B. Landers Road in Falmouth and slammed into a stand of trees.

High schools from Cape Cod and beyond issued statements of support. The other occupant, Owen Higgins, 17, of East Falmouth, was medflighted to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence following the accident with multi-trauma injuries, Deputy Chief Scott J. Thrasher of Falmouth Fire Rescue said.

It's not yet clear what caused the auto to go off the winding road, which is not very well lit.

Friends and loved ones held a vigil at the school Friday. The superintendent of Falmouth Public Schools said the school remained open so that the students "could come and have people to talk to who know them and understand them".
