USMNT lists WCQ roster for Mexico, Costa Rica: Youngsters Pulisic, Green in

The roster contains no major surprises, as the team slowly ambles to that stage in the World Cup cycle where the rosters get less experimental and more established.

The team Coach Juergen Klinsmann chose Sunday includes 15 players who have been part of a World Cup roster - among them goalkeeper Tim Howard, who has been on three World Cup teams, and midfielder Michael Bradley, forward Jozy Altidore and goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who have gone to two. He named Tim Howard as his starting goalkeeper and called up 18-year-old Cameron Carter-Vickers for the first time. The U.S. will then travel to face Costa Rica in San Jose, Costa Rica on November 15.

Forwards: Jozy Altidore (Toronto FC), Aron Johannsson (Werder Bremen), Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders), Bobby Wood (Hamburger SV).

The USMNT opens the Hexagonal round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying against Mexico in Columbus on Friday (7:45pm ET - Fox Sports 1). If Cameron can not play, Birnbaum would be battling Omar Gonzalez to partner John Anthony Brooks.

Others meriting selection are New York Red Bulls midfielder Sacha Kljestan, the MLS leader with 20 assists; forward Jordan Morris, a scorer of 12 goals in his rookie MLS campaign with the Seattle Sounders; and 18-yeard-old midfielder Christian Pulisic, who has made four appearances in this season's UEFA Champions League for Borussia Dortmund.

Klinsmann said that it came down to Guzan's lack of playing time for Middlesbrough. Jones and Trinidad & Tobago open qualifying at home against Costa Rica on November 11 before playing in Honduras on November 15.

The U.S. has beaten Mexico 2-0 in four consecutive home qualifiers, all in Columbus, where the Americans are 8-0-3.

“Obviously the Mexico clash is a six-pointer to start the Hexagonal right away, ” Klinsmann said. Christian Pulisic, Cameron Carter-Vickers Lynden Gooch, and Julian Green are a few of the young new players featured with the team. “We badly want to continue the tradition of beating them in Columbus.
