Jets starting Petty at QB over injured Fitzpatrick

Jets starting Petty at QB over injured Fitzpatrick

Assuming he's not pressed into action against the Rams, Fitzpatrick is thus in line to have some added healing time, with the Jets on bye in Week 11.

All of that makes you think the Jets will go back to Fitzpatrick as long as his knee gets better before the New England game.

"We haven't gotten that yet. I want to be in that film room and be as prepared as possible so that we don't have this feeling in the locker room again".

Bryce Petty made his first National Football League career start on Sunday, coming out on the losing end of an ugly 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams at MetLife Stadium.

There are many who believe the Jets need to give Petty more starts to see what he is capable of.

"Not right now", Bowles said.

"I wanted to start, but there's a lot of things that go into the decision", Fitzpatrick said. "We kind of tied up and I was able to rip it out from him and make the play". This team simply can't get it done on offense and that makes the Rams squad hard to watch in 2016. We'll take it. There was some discussion over the last couple of days between some of the staff members implying that this may be a 6-3 game with the way both defenses are playing.

Bowles said choosing between the two will be his call - not general manager Mike Maccagnan's or owner Woody Johnson's.

And, the player he chooses might not necessarily hold the job from here on out.

"I felt like I would be ready for game day", Gurley said. Asked if his choice will be permanent, he said, "It could change, but it could stay the same as well". Geno Smith, out for the year with a knee injury, is scheduled to become a free agent. He looked to be turning the team around when the Rams started 3-1, but now the heat has increased. So even when he says, "We have a bye week to evaluate it and I'll see how Fitz feels".

Officially benched as starter by the MCL sprain he sustained in last week's loss at Miami, Fitzpatrick was nonetheless in uniform as Petty's backup Sunday, but his active status fell purely under the break-only-in-emergency banner of desperation. Fitzpatrick has been a major disappointment and Petty has already shown he's more than capable of keeping those chains moving. It energized the crowd, which gave Petty a big ovation when he was introduced. He drove the Jets 99 yards on their second possession, finishing with his first NFL TD pass with a little razzle-dazzle on a toss to Brandon Marshall, who flipped it backward to Bilal Powell for a 4-yard score. Petty led the Jets near midfield, but then he forced a pass to Quincy Enunwa. He was poised. He threw a deep ball well.

"He was calm. He was poised when he was out there", Bowles said. He understood his reads. He went where he was supposed to go. He hurried up some things and that's going to happen when a first-time starter comes out there. He hurried some throws and he missed some reads as well.

That news means the Romo-or-Dak Prescott debate will be put off at least one more week.
