Florida QB Luke Del Rio out indefinitely, Gators down numerous starters

Florida sophomore quarterback Luke Del Rio has been ruled out of Saturday's game against visiting SC due to a shoulder injury.

Florida has re-opened its quarterback competition following another injury to starter Luke Del Rio, head coach Jim McElwain said Monday.

Graduate transfer Austin Appleby, who went 1-1 starting in Del Rio's place after the latter suffered a knee injury against North Texas, will get the first opportunity at the starting job.

He has completed 56.7 percent of his passes for 1,358 yards this season, with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Appleby has started two games for the Gators this season: a 38-28 loss on the road to Tennessee and a 13-6 win at Vanderbilt.

"He was banged up, played that way, " McElwain said.

Injuries will keep Del Rio, linebackers Jarrad Davis and Alex Anzalone and center Cam Dillard out of the lineup this week.

McElwain said UF didn't know the extent of Del Rio's injury during the game, but it became apparent during film review.

Del Rio struggled against Arkansas, finishing 19 of 37 for 229 yards and two interceptions and failing to get his team into the end zone. Anzalone, the team's second-leading tackler with 53, is having surgery on a broken arm and is out for the rest of the season. Appleby was at his best in the first half at Tennessee, but he was fairly pedestrian in six quarters since.

McElwain said he can simplify the passing reads for a true freshman, if either one is ready. Florida also could secure a spot in Atlanta for the second straight year by beating the Gamecocks and then winning at LSU next week.
