Transponder grace period offered for start of open tolling

Transponder grace period offered for start of open tolling

The move comes as the state switches over to all-electronic tolling roadways, which gives drivers with transponders a discount on tolls.

During the morning commute on Monday, drivers are asked to slow down as they approach the construction zones, but urged not to stop at the old tolls.

Shrewsbury/Westborough - Commuters west of Boston who wish to travel to the city will continue to pay tolls if they wish to use the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90). Demolition of the toll booths along Route 90 also started, accompanied by warnings from the Department of Transportation about increased traffic for about a month.

Those with no tag at all will pay much more to travel. It automatically charges vehicles with transponders as they pass through 16 electronic gantries.

The toll gantries are not necessarily located in the same place as the toll booths they are replacing. The rate will be slightly higher than that for E-ZPass to cover associated costs.

"A lot of people have been getting transponders, which is great", he said".

E-ZPass centers across the state processed 881 customers between 7 a.m. and noon Saturday, said Jacquelyn Goddard, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation.

"The website as it exists today is more informational not transactional". On-line services, such as signing up for an E-ZPass MA account, viewing customer's existing accounts, and paying Pay By Plate invoices for the Tobin Bridge or toll violations will be unavailable until Tuesday, November 1, at 7 a.m.

But a major project that will dismantle the toll plazas and instead collect tolls via All Electronic Tolling (AET) should eventually make the process less painful. She moved her transponder to a new auto and didn't realize she had to change the vehicle associated with the transponder accordingly.
