Svetlana Kuznetsova edges out Johanna Konta in race for WTA Finals

Svetlana Kuznetsova edges out Johanna Konta in race for WTA Finals

"I was trying not to think about Singapore all week", Kuznetsova told WTA Insider right after her win.

Top seed Svetlana Kuznetsova will not have much time to savor defending her Kremlin Cup title in Moscow.

She said: "Before the match, when I was warming up, my body hurt".

Only this week, the American confirmed that she was indeed pulling out of the WTA Finals which opened up a slot for another player.

Kuznetsova started slowly against Daria Gavrilova, who broke the Russian in her first service game to open up a 2-0 lead but that was her only moment of triumph as Kuznetsova went on a tear winning the next six games to take the first set, and winning ten on the spin in total.

With the title win, Kuznetsova earned the last remaining spot for the WTA Finals in Singapore edging out Great Britain's Jo Konta.

The ATP has avoided the potential for any such problem by keeping a week clear between the last qualifying event, the Paris Masters, and the season-ending World Tour Finals, now held in London.

Gavrilova was looking for her first career title in her first final.

Gavrilova, meanwhile, was reduced to tears after a competitive start against Kuznetsova was followed by the loss of 10 consecutive games, her first WTA final ending 6-2, 6-1. "And I´m really happy that I played my first career final in Moscow".

She also criticized WTA Schedule, that "is unfair for me".

The ninth-ranked Kuznetsova, who has two Grand Slam titles, will board a flight to Singapore bruised but buoyed after a hectic week that has brought four wins in as many days and 470 ranking points, enough to edge Konta out of the frame by a 95-point margin.

The Russian will line up in white group, alongside second seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who she will face on Monday in her first match, as well as French Open champion Garbiñe Muguruza and US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova.
