The defender was substituted after 52 minutes of the Red Devils' 4-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday, and it now seems he could be on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

The 22-year-old became José Mourinho's first signing of the summer when he joined the club in a £30m deal from Villarreal, and despite the significant investment, the Ivorian defender has proved to be something of a revelation in Man United's back line.

Having shipped four goals against Chelsea at the weekend, losing Eric Bailly was the last thing Manchester United needed. "He feels it is really bad".

After undergoing a number of medical tests after Sunday's game, the news was confirmed to Bailly on Tuesday who could now miss as many as 12 upcoming games over the next two months.

The Ivory Coast global broke the news through his Instagram account and thanked everyone for their support.

"I hope to be able to play again for United and The Elephants (Ivory Coast) before two months, God willing", added Bailly who has started all United's league games this season.

The player is expected to travel to the African Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast in January and with the injury expected to keep him out until late December, Manchester United could be without the services of their best defensive resource for a long time. "Thanks for always being there".
