Iran's president says US election offers only bad or worse choice

"Do we want this kind of democracy in our country?"

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday that he had no preference in the U.S. election race between Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, saying it was a choice between "bad and worse".

"You saw the presidential debates, how they talk.how they accuse and mock (each other)", Rouhani told a crowd gathered at a stadium during his visit to the central city of Arak.

Rouhani said a head of state had asked him during his visit to the United Nations in September which candidate he preferred.

The US presidential battle has seen regular mudslinging and scandal.

Iran's state TV has broadcast two of the debates between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton in full.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani made the remark in a meeting with his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolás Maduro in Tehran on Saturday evening, and stressed the necessity of coordination and technical cooperation among OPEC and non-OPEC countries to achieve this end.

"Do we want such elections in our country?"

Mrs Clinton has said Mr Trump would be a "puppet" of Russia's Vladimir Putin if elected.

Despite a landmark nuclear deal with the United States and world powers that went into effect in January, Tehran and Washington have not restored diplomatic ties that were cut after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and US Embassy takeover.

Rouhani signed the nuclear accord a year ago with the United States and world powers that led to the lifting of sanctions and raised hopes that Iran would return to the worldwide fold.
