The theme for this year's International Day of the Girl (11 October) is Girls' Progress = Goals' Progress: What Counts for girls.

Save the Children's CEO Kevin Watkins said: "Child marriage isn't just a form of discrimination, it's a form of violence".

Even though Malawi has now made child marriage illegal, campaigners have voiced concerns that marriages regulated by custom can occur informally. She has annulled almost 1,500 marriages among her constituents and has developed bylaws with other traditional leaders in order to eradicate all child marriages and gender-related issues.

11th October is known to be as one of the most honourable and important days in the whole world, As this day is remarked as global day of the Girl child and this day also has an worldwide observance day which is declared by United Nations. Some of the countries absent have notable issues, such as Russian Federation, which has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, and China, "where people kill baby girls like housework" according to CNN, and there are over 100,000 children abandoned every year.

Yet the practice persists because some societies view girls as a financial burden while others believe a girl should marry as early as possible to maximize her fertility.
