9 officers being treated for injuries, trauma

Nine officers were treated for minor injuries, stress and trauma after a shootout left two Boston police officers wounded and a suspect dead.

BPD confirming 2 Boston Police officers shot in the area of 136 Gladstone Street in East Boston.

Police say the officers were responding to a report of a person with a gun late Wednesday night in East Boston when they came under fire. Around 11:39 EST police asked residents to shelter-in-place as officers searched the area for a suspect.

No other information was immediately available.

State police, SWAT units, transit police and Winthrop Police also responded to the firefight Wednesday night.

The wounded officers were in "extremely critical condition" but out of surgery and with their families on Thursday morning, Police Commissioner William Evans said. "They moved in and neutralized the threat pretty quick (so) that no one else got killed", he told reporters.

"Domestic calls, as you know, are probably the most volatile", Evans said at the press conference, reported by The Globe.

The suspect has not been identified, but Evans said he was in his early 30s. "And I think we see right now the dangers of our job".

Several other officers responded and went inside the residence, where they exchanged fire with and eventually killed the suspect.

Evans said the officers shot and killed the suspect and then began giving first aid to the wounded officers - one a 28-year veteran and the other a 12-year veteran of Boston Police.

Police, initially concerned that their might be a second suspect, ordered residents to shelter in place.

Officers, Evans added, are "not proud when we have to use deadly force but obviously we had two officers gravely injured there and we had no choice".

The Suffolk County District Attorney's office will investigate the incident, as it does for all police-involved shooting.

The two officers who were shot were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
