Suspect in Washington Shooting 'Zombie-Like' When Arrested

Authorities arrested a suspect Saturday evening in in the slayings of five people in the makeup department of a Macy's store at a mall north of Seattle.

A man carrying a rifle entered a Macy's store at a mall in Washington state, shot dead four women and a man, and vanished into the night, police said.

At a press conference Saturday night, Lt. Mike Hawley with the Island County Sheriff's Office said Cetin was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. after his vehicle was spotted by Oak Harbor Police Department officers.

Authorities did not say how the suspect may have obtained the weapon - whether he retrieved it from outside or picked it up in the mall - but they believe he acted alone. Instead, he froze and complied, Hawley said.

Mount Vernon Police Lt. Chris Cammock said at the press conference that Cetin's capture came after police received several tips from the public. His location in the mall was unclear.

Island County Sheriff's Office Lt. Mike Hawley, who was one of the first law enforcement officials to make contact with Cetin, said at a Saturday night news conference that when approached by law enforcement Cetin was unarmed, did not speak and appeared "zombie-like".

The Seattle Times reports ( that Skagit County court records show three domestic-violence assault charges against Cetin.

Arcan Cetin, 20, was arrested Saturday night after a day-long manhunt.

A judge said in December 2015 Cetin was not allowed to possess a firearm, according to the Seattle Times. Pastor Cody Natland lit a candle for each of the five killed, then invited congregants to call out prayers to the people they were thinking about.

Mayor Steve Sexton said the city has "probably changed forever". The FBI is investigating that attack as a potential act of terrorism. "Our hearts are in Burlington", Governor Jay Inslee said on Twitter. US Pacific time while walking along a road in Oak Harbor.

The alleged gunman was captured by authorities on Saturday, said Sergeant Mark Francis on Twitter, a move confirmed by the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management. Burlington is the only major retail center within 30 miles (48 kilometers) in a region where agriculture is king.

Earlier Saturday as police scrambled to find the shooter, the small city about 60 miles (97 kilometers) waited and anxious.

The community of 8,600 people is too far from Seattle to be a commuter town, but its population swells to 55,000 during the day because of a popular outlet mall, retail stores and other businesses.

"It's too scary. It's too close to home", said Maria Elena Vasquez, who attended a gathering in a city park Saturday with her husband and two young children. Cammock could not say if there was a connection between the suspect and any of the victims.

The youngest of the mall shooting victims, Sarai Lara, was 16. Her mother said she tried to get to Sarai, but was blocked from entering the shooting scene. "She was an amazingly kind and caring individual who was much adored by her friends, her coworkers and the thousands of probationers who she helped find a better way to live.", the Skagit County court said in a statement.

Stephanie Bose, an assistant general manager at Johnny Carino's Italian restaurant near the Macy's store at the mall, said she immediately locked the doors to the restaurant after hearing about the shooting from an employee's boyfriend.
