Stroman, Blue Jays lose 8-3 to Rays

Logan Forsythe continued to be a thorn in the side of Marco Estrada.

The big outburst came against Estrada (8-7) after he allowed just two singles in the first five innings. The Rays have worked through four catchers this season, but the current tandem of Luke Maile and Bobby Wilson has been hitting the ball well. The Jays last saw Snell on August 10th.

METS 5, NATIONALS 1: Rookie Seth Lugo allowed one run and six hits over seven innings, and Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce each hit a two-run homer as NY won at home.

Eddie Gamboa, a 31-year-old knuckleballer called up as rosters expanded, made his major league debut for the Rays in the eighth, getting a strikeout but walking two and giving up a run.

Edwin Encarnacion had an RBI double and Russell Martin picked up his 22nd RBI in his last 16 games on an infield single as the Blue Jays went up 2-0 in the first.

Checking in on our favourite narrative, that of the Estrada Whisperer Dioner Navarro, Dinner was in the lineup and catching Estrada in this one. "I was really, really impressed with the way he competed and executed his pitches tonight, and looked really, really comfortable out there".

After allowing an earned run in the first inning, his first frame ERA is 7.13 (23-ER/29-IP). It's been a rough year for Russell Martin behind the plate. He would become just the second Blue Jays' starter in franchise history to win at least 18 joining David Wells who won 20 in 2000. On the throw to the plate, Navarro strayed too far off first base and was caught off the base for the third out, but after Encarnacion had scored to make it 1-0. Brad Miller walked to give the Rays the lead. Duffy's double was the fifth hit of the inning. In addition to a myriad of September call-ups that will undoubtedly bolster the Jays' bench and bullpen, the Jays' decision to move Francisco Liriano to the bullpen should provide some much needed left-handed bullpen relief in order to take the pressure off Brett Cecil.

TIGERS 6, ROYALS 5: Justin Upton hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, sending Detroit to a win at Kansas City, Missouri.

Both pitcher's were done by the 7th. Kevin Jepsen (2-6, 5.59 ERA) takes the loss. Blake Snell: 6 IP, 1 ER on 2 H, 7 SO, and 1 BB.

The Rays would add two more runs in the seventh on a Kevin Kiermaier two-run home run that bounced off the foul pole in right. "We got two runs up on the board in the first and then didn't scratch one across until too late".

After retiring Encarnacion on a ground ball to third and Michael Saunders on a fly out to center, Cobb finished up a ideal third by getting Russell Martin to look at a fastball. He allowed a pair of hits and walked a pair. "Really, really impressed with the way he competed and executed pitches". Unfortunately, he only got the end of the bat on a ball and weakly flew out to left to end an exciting 9th. He reached base twice on walks but couldn't extend his run. The Jays will look to salvage at least a win from this otherwise very bad series.

That he didn't get outs consistently during the Blue Jays two-run first was largely a result, Cobb said, of the fact that he hadn't been on a big-league mound in two years, not a lack of stuff. Now they have their ace on the mound in Archer to go head-to-head with Happ, who is struggling right now.
