Obama to lead nation in remembering those killed on 9/11

More events to pay tribute to 9/11 are set to take place throughout the day in NY, including a motorcycle ride through the city and a march of firefighters across the Brooklyn Bridge.

"Groups like al-Qaida, [and the Islamic State of Iraq and The Levant] know they will never be able to defeat a nation as great and as strong as America", Obama said.

Obama also vowed that the USA will never bow to the wishes of terrorists who, through their attacks, hope to change the way Americans live.

In the 15 years since the Al-Qaeda suicide plane strikes on the Pentagon, New York's World Trade Center and in Pennsylvania, "the threat has evolved", said Mr Obama.

"We delivered justice to (Al-Qaeda leader) Osama bin Laden".

The American flag was lowered to half-staff at the White House and other federal buildings. Acts of terror meant to break us failed.

President Barack Obama, earlier in the day, marked the anniversary with a moment of silence in the Oval Office.

The hours-long reading of the names of the dead took place at the memorial plaza in New York City.

"We're here today in that spirit to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, to maintain our commitment to never forget, and to demonstrate our loyalty tohigh ideals", Dunford said. "There is no New Yorker who somehow evaded the pain of that day". The ride is a tribute to the first responders and their efforts to save those injured or killed in the terrorist attack. "Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you...write them on the tablet of your heart", Obama said, quoting from the book of Proverbs.

They believe that rogue elements within the USA government orchestrated or at least encouraged the 9/11 attacks in coordination with Israeli and Saudi Arabian officials to accelerate the U.S. war machine and advance the Zionist agenda.

That day and the almost 3,000 men and women who died in the attacks were remembered across the nation with various memorial ceremonies. "They rushed to danger, not from it". It is also a day of resolve.

The Roman Catholic cathedral was filled to capacity for the afternoon service with city dignitaries, firefighters and the families of those killed.

In a statement, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Americans were not the only ones who fell victim.

It's the courage of Welles Crowther, just 24 years old, in the South tower - the man in the red bandana who spent his final moments helping strangers to safety before the towers fell.

Cathy Cava, who lost her sister, Grace Susca Galante, has attended all 15 years. More than 400 emergency workers in NY were killed.

Now, his lungs are failing, and doctors say that will lead to his death.

They listened to the almost four-hour recitation of the names of those killed.

The commemoration ceremony at the World Trade Centre site will begin at 8:46 a.m. In December, Obama signed a law extending funding through 2090.

"Instead, we have grown even more vigilant, even more resolved, and even more determined to protect our people, assist our friends, and defend civilization from those who would tear it down", he said. About 40 percent have respiratory or gastrointestinal problems.

"I've got mixed emotions, but I'm still kind of numb", he said.
