Now the ACC Pulls Its Major Championships From North Carolina Over HB2

That includes the conference championship game in football, which had been scheduled for December 3 in Charlotte.

Two gay-rights organizations say their fall elections drive in North Carolina aims to replace Republican Gov.

"Today's action by the ACC Council of Presidents is consistent with and reflects the value Virginia Tech places on inclusion and diversity", the university said.

The decision will affect major games in a variety of sports - though, notably, not men's college basketball, which was already slated to hold its league tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn - from swimming and golf to soccer and, the most lucrative championship of all, college football.

Wake County Republican Tamara Barringer was the first GOP senator to call for the full repeal of HB2 following the NCAA decision earlier this week.

The law also restricts local governments from enacting their own legislation that bans discrimination.

However, Barringer said that she remains supportive of the law's limits on transgender bathroom use.

North Carolina has the only statewide law that makes it unlawful to use a restroom different from the gender on one's birth certificate, regardless of gender identity.

McCrory's Democratic gubernatorial opponent Attorney General Roy Cooper, meanwhile, issued a statement on Wednesday continuing to call for the immediate repeal of HB2.

McCrory and his allies blame the Human Rights Campaign, the "sports and entertainment elite" and Democrats for conspiring to make an example out of North Carolina on LGBT rights. Several high-profile entertainers, including Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam, have canceled shows in North Carolina.

In July, the National Basketball Association pulled its 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte over objections to H.B. 2.

And now the ACC, which is headquartered in Greensboro, is doing the same.

In a statement he said, "The issue of redefining gender and basic norms of privacy will be resolved in the near future in the United States court system for not only North Carolina, but the entire nation".

"We believe North Carolina House Bill 2 is inconsistent with these values, and as a result, we will relocate all neutral site championships for the 2016-17 academic year".

- The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) announced Wednesday it will move all neutral site championship games out of North Carolina for the 2016-2017 academic year over HB2. "Although we are disappointed, we remain steadfast in providing an inclusive environment at Bank of America Stadium".

He also told Swofford that the ACC, NCAA and other companies and organizations now boycotting North Carolina because of the controversial law known as House Bill 2 are guilty of "profound hypocrisy" for "making calculated business decisions disguised as moral outrage".

Those two events would have generated almost $500,000 in revenue for Cary, according to the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance. North Carolina is considered the home of the ACC.

ACC commissioner John Swofford said after the NCAA's decision, conference officials would review their next steps.
