Giants RB Vereen out at least eight weeks

The Giants also announced Monday that rookie safety Darian Thompson will not need surgery to fix his foot injury, but that he will remain in a walking boot and be listed as "week-to-week".

The Giants originally called it a season-ending injury on Monday, then backed off in the hope that Vereen could return from injured reserve late this season, if that is still an option. Rainey had a reasonably productive run with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014, averaging 4.3 yards per carry with 33 receptions, but he was buried on their depth chart last season with just five carries in 16 games. He added two catches for 28 yards. It was unclear when Vereen suffered the injury Sunday, and he was on the field for the Giants' final drive in what turned out to be a 29-27 loss. "He's played a lot of football in this league", coach Ben McAdoo said Friday.

"I think he was playing with it for a significant amount of time", McAdoo said. The Giants didn't play Jennings because they were concerned about his ability to play on passing down with an injury thumb. Bobby Rainey would appear most likely to step in as the third-down back and serve as a receiving threat out of the backfield. Asked how he will replace Vereen, McAdoo said, "by committee". The Giants used Vereen as their pass-catching back.
