Dodgers clinch NL West title in Scully's final home game

Dodgers clinch NL West title in Scully's final home game

September 25, 2016; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully acknowledges spectators before the sixth inning against the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

On Sunday, Charlie Culberson ended the Dodgers' game against the Rockies in the 10th inning with a walkoff home run, clinching the NL West and a spot in the postseason for Los Angeles.

"I called him and said, 'I've given it a lot of thought, which was not true, I just don't think I'm qualified and I think I'd be happier doing my baseball games, '" Scully said. That should come as a relief to Dodgers fans who for 67 years havent heard anyone except Scully wax lyrical about their beloved team. If they lost and the Padres beat the Giants, the Dodgers would wrap it up. "Care not at all".

Scully's final game will be next Sunday on the road in San Francisco against the Giants.

And each time those dreams included the voice of Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully.

Rookie Manuel Margot tripled in the seventh inning and scored the go-ahead run on Wil Myers' single as San Diego dropped San Francisco a game behind the New York Mets in the NL wild-card race.

Culberson's most recent home run - in August of 2014 - had come when he was playing for the Rockies. He begged indulgence of the fans to play a recording of the song of the same name, sung by Scully himself.

In apparent corroboration for those who assert the existence of sky-based phantoms often dubbed "baseball gods", something really, really unusual happened Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Although Davis hasnt sought out Scully for advice, not wanting to badger him in his final months, the Hall of Famer was asked recently if he had any.

As retirement sendoffs go, it had been off-the-charts, rather like Scully's Dodgers and national career.

"This year has been a little different for me personally, being out for so long", he said.

The Orioles tightened their grip on that wildcard berth by edging Arizona 2-1, with Hyun Soo Kim's two-run homer in the second inning proving to be just enough.

Charlie Culberson, a utility man that spent most of the season in Triple-A, hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to give the Dodgers their fourth straight consecutive division title. "I wish he hadn't told you that". The rookie has beaten the Dodgers twice this season, but hasn't won that second victory over them on August 31. "He (Scully) has been around the game too long and meant so much to so many people".

"All I feel is thanksgiving".

"We're all taking deep breaths, Vin", Costner said. "It was overwhelming, so the only thing I tried to do, like a rookie, was not get a hit but try not to strike out, which is a bad way, but that's how you begin".

"I have never been as starstruck than I was at that moment, short of seeing LeBron (James) or Michael Jordan", Ottavino said. "You're the wind beneath the team's wings and you're the team beneath my wings".

The Dodgers announced the attendance at 51,962, pushing the home season total to more than 3.7million, best in the major leagues.

As the Dodgers gathered as a giddy group down on the field - wearing division title ballcaps and T-shirts and having just generally carried on like kids at recess - Scully addressed everyone from his broadcast booth. It was literally the last chance the Dodgers could celebrate with their fans, and their legendary announcer.

"I remember, Red saying to me, 'I don't want you to listen to me, ' but I was listening (to him)", Scully recalled of the experience six decades ago in Brooklyn.

ASTROS 4, ANGELS 1: Joe Musgrove (4-4) pitched seven strong innings, Evan Gattis, Tony Kemp and Tyler White homered, and Houston snapped a three-game slide to beat Los Angeles and preserve its playoff hopes.
