Cahill gives Australia win over UAE in World Cup qualifier

Tim Cahill came off the bench to score the victor in Australia's World Cup qualifying victory over United Arab Emirates.

"I respect his opinion, but we shall see on the field", Ali replied, when quizzed about Postecoglou's remarks at his pre-match press conference.

Asked if the UAE can emerge as a powerhouse, the coach said: "We qualified for first time in 1990 and since then we have worked hard to qualify for the second World Cup".

The Socceroos are coming off a 2-0 win over Iraq in Perth in their opening World Cup qualifier, while UAE got a great result on the road, winning 2-1 over Japan.

"We lost one match".

"We understand for any major tournament or qualification process, the challenges lies on the pitch and sometimes with the conditions", said Postecoglou.

It has always been a feature of Australian teams that they are tough and bloodyminded, always prepared to dig deep to extract the most from themselves.

"It will be hard for both teams, not only Australia". They have three points but will console themselves with the thought that it is still early in the qualifying competition and there are another eight matches to go.

Speaking ahead of training, Australian coach Ange Postecoglou said he expected to have all 23 players at his disposal against the UAE.

Australia, ranked 17 places in the world higher than the UAE at 57th by Federation Internationale de Football Association, created the better opportunities in sapping heat in the capital. "I believe only in what the team is doing at this moment". They were looking to waste time and I reckon they'd have been happier to get a point.

But three minutes later defender Mathew Spiranovic would have put the Socceroos ahead when he nodded a header off a corner towards the UAE nets but Khalid Eisa deftly palmed it away. We will stick to our game plan. "We work for a long time to create an identity for our team and I think we have an identity". They [UAE] just couldn't keep up and we got the goal we deserved and probably could have got a couple more. They all play in the local league here and are given the privilege, I guess, by the league to prepare for these type of games and these sort of windows with as much time as they need. Having played in 8 rounds in Group B, Australia won 21 points at a difference of 29 goals: 4 and won the 1st place in the standings.

"We are working together as a team to overcome their strengths, and take advantage of their weaknesses". They did very well in the Asian Cup a year ago and they have started the qualification for this period very strong.
