Bomb squad detonates device found in New Jersey

A few blocks away from the blast site and shortly after the explosion occurred, investigators found a pressure cooker on 27th street with dark-colored wiring sticking out, connected by silver duct tape to what appeared to be a cell phone, officials said.

Christian Bollwage, the mayor of Elizabeth, said that two men found a bag containing five devices in a trash can at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

The FBI launched a raid Monday morning in Elizabeth, New Jersey, at an apartment belonging to Ahmad Khan Rahami, a naturalized citizen from Afghanistan linked to the NY and New Jersey bomb blasts, investigators said. New York Gov. The FBI and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Rahami is a USA citizen of Afghan descent.

Police earlier had released a photo of a 28-year-old immigrant wanted for questioning, and the governor and New York City mayor said the blast Saturday in the Chelsea neighborhood is looking increasingly like an act of terrorism with a foreign connection. In the other New Jersey incident, investigators discovered three pipe-bomb-type devices wired together, but no one was wounded.

With commuters on high alert, people have been reporting suspicious packages to police.

The backpack had up to five devices, Elizabeth's mayor Chris Bollwage said.

Another device was found four blocks away and removed to a Bronx firing range for controlled detonation.

"Enhanced security measures are in place at stations, on trains and along the tracks", the rail service said in a statement. "There are no injuries & law enforcement personnel are at the scene processing evidence", according to a tweet from FBI Newark account.

The recent events have also led to an increased precautionary police presence surrounding NJ Transit's New Brunswick train station this morning after a suspicious package was found on top of the Douglas Parking Deck on the Rutgers New Brunswick campus.

Ahmad Khan Rahami- the same man wanted in connection with Saturday's bombing in NY - has been arrested in connection with the explosion in New Jersey.

Investigators believe more people were involved in the NY and New Jersey bombing plots, two USA officials told Reuters. Police then informed the Union County Bomb Squad.

The Chelsea blast followed a pipe bomb explosion on Saturday morning along the route of a running race in the New Jersey beach town of Seaside Park.

The bomb that rocked the bustling Manhattan neighborhood contained residue of Tannerite, an explosive often used for target practice that can be picked up in many sporting goods stores, a federal law enforcement official said Sunday.
