Authorities retrieve weapon from mall shooting

But Knutson cautioned, "I can not discount it".

Chris Cammock said Saturday that authorities recovered the weapon from the scene.

Washington State Patrol spokesman Mark Francis said that police and rescue crews worked their way through the mall, clearing stores and evacuating shoppers, some of whom, according to local media, locked themselves in dressing rooms.

The suspect was last seen walking towards an interstate highway that runs past the mall, which is 45 miles south of the Canadian province of British Columbia. His whereabouts are now unknown and police appealed to the public for help. A suspect with a knife who was dressed in a private security uniform made references to Allah while attacking at least eight people there. "Our community comes together in times of tragedy, and we're going to do it again".

Washington State Trooper Mark Francis speaks to the media at the Cascade Mall following reports of an active shooter in Burlington, Washington, on September 23, 2016.

She said he could see police at the doors and said they were no longer guarding the doors as of 9:30pm. Police have asked residents in the area to remain indoors and secure until they find the suspect. He said the ages of the victims appeared to range from their 20s to elderly, but had no further identifying information. They say until an autopsy has been done on each of the bodies, they will not be releasing any information about the victims.

Police Friday night said that one person was hospitalized in critical condition and another victim suffered non-life threatening injures.

State police released a grainy photo of the suspect taken by a surveillance camera.

Stephanie Bose, an assistant general manager at Johnny Carino's Italian restaurant near the Macy's store at the mall, said she immediately locked the doors after hearing about the shooting from an employee's boyfriend. "I turn around and run to the store". He announced the shooting and that play was being suspended."Once they realized the shooter was not in custody, they started letting people know how to get out", Teeter said.

"I just moved them into the (T-Mobile) store", Patino said.

Four women were killed in the attack in the mall's Macy's store cosmetics department, Francis told the New York Times.

Doc Barron, who had been teaching a boxing class at the mall, told the Skagit Valley Herald that he heard a commotion outside and a bunch of people yelling and screaming for help. "And it got very quiet", she added.

A manhunt is underway in Washington State after a lone gunman opened fire at a shopping mall north of Seattle on Friday night, killing five people, then walked away.

Law enforcement officers performed an initial sweep of the mall to ensure it had been evacuated.
