Anthony scored 31 points for the United States, including 14 in a first quarter that saw him overtake LeBron James as the all-time leading scorer among men in U.S. Olympic play.

The Americans outlasted the upset-minded Aussies 98-88 as Anthony scored a game-high 31 points, 14 in the fourth quarter, and Irving sank 12 of his 19 in the last period.

The team is made up of talented basketball players like; Jimmy Butler, Carmelo Anthony, DeMarcus Cousins, Harrison Barnes, Kevin Durant, DeMar DeRozan, Draymond Green, Paul George, DeAndre Jordan, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Kyle Lowry. His mastery behind the three-point line (nine for 15) caused an audible reaction from the pro-Australian crowd inside Carioca Arena 1.

Trailing the Boomers 72-70 early in the fourth quarter, Anthony tied the game from inside the paint, then hit two big 3-pointers to put the US ahead for good as they remained on top of the Group A standings with a 3-0 record. His teammate and 2013 graduate from WSU, Brock Motum, only played three minutes and recorded one rebound.

Turning Point: The USA returned to the floor for the second half and went on a 9-0 run that put them in front.

They were connected on defense and they put on an early offensive exhibition, flashing the firepower no other team can match.

Nando de Colo scored the first four of those points and finished with 22 to lead France. Irving played only 11 games in college while at Duke and still managed to become the overall number one pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. An eventual double-digit win didn't tell the full story for Team USA, which needed to overcome an early struggle against a talented Australian team that never stopped moving offensively. The Australians, with big bodies inside, quality point guards to counter the American pressure and a wealth of National Basketball Association championship experience, stood toe to toe with the team that had blown them out of the last two Olympics in the quarterfinals.

"For this group, that was the first real worldwide game", said Krzyzewski, who will step down as usa coach after the Rio Games.

Anthony also became the all-time leader in points scored for the United States of America in the game, passing LeBron James for the top spot.

"It was a great a tussle and I'm sure we'll play these guys again".

The 10-point win over Australia - just the fifth time the USA has won by 10 or fewer since 2006 - raised the possibility that this American team might not be as golden as previous ones.

"They're going to vie for a gold medal". The Americans led 70-67 after three quarters.

Having steamrolled their two previous opponents, the United States of America hasn't had to really lock in yet and the furious pressure the Boomers played at caught them off guard a little. Irving starts at the point guard position for Team USA.

Once again, it was Anthony whose presence made the difference as his three-pointer halfway through the fourth gave the USA a necessary spark.
