Trump endorses Ryan in latest attempt to reboot campaign

Ryan had dismissed the importance of a Trump endorsement Friday morning in another local radio interview with WISN's Jay Weber.

Trump also tried to mend relations with two Republican senators whom he'd criticized after they faulted him for attacking the Khans: John McCain of Arizona and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire. On Friday night, Trump tried hard to make amends as his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, tried to take advantage of his gaffe-filled week.

After talking about McCain, Trump endorsed Ayotte.

Ryan himself said he hasn't spoken to Trump since the GOP convention, has no plans to, and has no idea whether their differences are going to persevere through the campaign.

The Janesville Republican is facing a primary challenge from businessman Paul Nehlen in the state's 1st Congressional District. Ryan has called for an "open door" immigration system that allowed workers to come and go to fill Very important. We'll work together.

At first, Pence was noncommittal when asked whether or not he would endorse the two Senators for re-election on August 4, telling reporters while on a plane: "I look forward to supporting Republican candidates in the days and weeks ahead all over the country, and so does Donald Trump".

Trump also endorsed Senator John McCain and Senator Kelly Ayotte during the rally.

The Republican presidential candidate made the announcement during a campaign stop in Green Bay, Wisconsin. "So, I'm just going to rise above the stuff and I'm not going to get involved in some sort of petty back and forth".

In not endorsing Ryan, Trump mimicked the speaker's words from a CNN interview in May before Ryan reluctantly endorsed the nominee the following month on Twitter.

Speaking in Green Bay, Wis., on Friday, Trump cited exactly that - party unity - as his reason for endorsing Ryan, albeit belatedly.

"In the intelligence business, we would say that Mr. Putin had recruited Mr. Trump as an unwitting agent of the Russian Federation", he added.

But as the highest-ranking Republican in Washington, Ryan is hugely influential - something Trump has clearly recognised.

"If Hillary Clinton becomes president", he said at an earlier rally in Iowa, "you will have really, in my opinion, the destruction of this country from within".

"I may have short circuited and for that I will try to clarify", she told a group of minority journalists in Washington, though still insisting that she "never sent or received anything that was marked classified".

Clinton conceded that she had "short-circuited" earlier in the week in interviews when she had asserted that Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey had concluded that she had been truthful in her statements about use of the private server.
