Suspected meth lab found under parking lot of NY Wal-Mart

Has it happened before?

Amherst police say officers found the evidence in a culvert that runs below the parking lot.

Police responded to those concerns, stating that shoppers were not in any danger. They're the ones, the Hazmat, they're the ones that have the expertise in this.

Amherst Police Captain Scott Chamberlain said officers regularly "look into areas where people could be up to no good".

Shoppers watched as it was reviewed right in the parking lot.

What they found was even more surprising.

"I seen men suited up, and I didn't know if somebody got hurt...."

He said they did not receive any tips. All of it was happening in a very busy section; the suspected meth lab was found underneath a Walmart. In Walmart's parking lot? "You know, that's insane", Marie Jamieson of nearby Kenmore told WGRZ News. Dawn Clowen was driving home from work when she found out and chose to stop by. "Just not a safe environment, I mean, you can't feel safe anywhere anymore", says Clowen.

"It's very small", said Detective Lt. JoAnn DiNoto of the Amherst Police narcotics unit.

"That's what we do every day", Chamberlin told the news outlet.

Fire companies from Buffalo, Tonawanda, Clarence are assisting Amherst Fire.

Details are scarce at this point, but we can tell you there is a heavy police presence near the Walmart on Sheridan Drive at Bailey Avenue. Homeland Security is also there.
