Hospitals in Srinagar and elsewhere are full of injured civilians; over 400 of them with bullet and pellet injuries above their waist line. A youth was killed and three others were injured in firing on a violent mob in Khumriyal in the border district of Kupwara.

Cellular phone services have been snapped partially and Srinagar's historic Grand Mosque was locked and no Friday congregational prayers were allowed.

Two others were injured in clashes in nearby Pattan town, the official said.

As policemen lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the stone-throwing mob, a militant hiding in the crowd first hurled a grenade and then fired from an AK-47 rifle at the policemen.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan, and most people in India's portion resent the Indian troop presence and want independence or a merger with Pakistan. "There is no issue of Kashmir between Indian and Pakistan and we are not ready to accept it. " was way back in 1994 that Indian Parliament passed an unanimous resolution stating that if at all there is any outstanding issue, it is how to retrieve part of J&K which remains under illegal occupation of Pakistan", the Minister of State in the PMO told reporters here. 36 people have been killed in the ongoing violence in the Valley, mainly in south Kashmir.

Separatist politicians extended call for protests and a shutdown of the region for the next three days. India's Foreign Ministry said Friday that it was dismayed by Pakistan's attempt to "interfere in our internal matters".

Further needling India on the Kashmir issue, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today declared slain Hizbul commander Burhan Wani as a "martyr" and said July 19 will be observed as black day to express solidarity with people of Kashmir. "The attempt came from Pakistan, a country that covets the territory of others; a country that uses terrorism as state policy towards that misguided end; a country that extols the virtues of terrorists and that provides sanctuary to UN-designated terrorists; and a country that masquerades its efforts as support for human rights and self determination", said Akbaruddin while retorting to the allegation. At least 100 people have had operations for eye injuries caused by pellet guns and they needed advanced treatment, with doctors saying most will lose partial or complete eyesight.

"Only postpaid connections of BSNL are working", the official said.
