Republican platform remains socially conservative as GOP committee finishes work

In a fund-raising letter, Gregory T. Angelo, president of the Log Cabin Republicans declared he was shocked and dismayed that the GOP had passed "the most anti-LGBT platform in the Party's 162-year history".

This is not the first time Hoff has tried to get her party to be more inclusive toward LBGT people.

In the Midwest swing states of Iowa and Ohio, Republican Donald Trump is running neck and neck with Democratic contender Hillary Clinton, according to a new WSJ/NBC News/Marist poll.

While Republican opposition to statehood is in line with GOP actions on Capitol Hill, the party lines haven't always been so clear. Despite a concerted effort by a handful of progressive delegates, the panel ultimately made no concessions towards the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

We noted yesterday that Religious Right leaders had spent months making sure that the Republican platform committee would be stacked with "strong conservative voices" in order to resist an organized effort by pro-equality Republicans to replace anti-gay language in 2012's far-right platform with something more inclusive.

"We are your daughters, your sons, your friends, your neighbors, your colleagues, the couple that sits next to you in church", Hoff told the committee.

The lone gay delegate, Rebecca Hoff, was left in tear after begging the committee to tone down the attack on same-sex marriage.

If Republicans are very lucky, the vast majority of Americans will have no idea what's in the party's new platform. He and Boyd Matheson, who signed the minority report Tuesday but have since removed their names, accuse the group of hijacking the platform process to force the party into a messy floor debate on gay-rights issues at next week's convention.

NY delegate Annie Dickerson said the GOP Platform Committee has been resisting an obvious trend in the country toward gay rights, calling same-sex marriage "settled law", saying it is only a matter of time before federal nondiscrimination statutes protecting LGBT rights are enacted.

Before the Grand Old Party picks its presidential nominee formally, a select set of delegates on the platform committee will spend the week staking out Republican positions on everything from domestic to worldwide issues definitively.

Judy Carns, a delegate from Alabama, opposed Hoff, saying, "I don't want our platform watered down like that".

The 2016 GOP Platform Committee has strengthened the wording in its policy document to match the presumptive nominee's campaign promise.

"I've encouraged him to embrace the platform, and I believe that he will", said Wyoming Sen.

There are also provisions promoting state laws putting limits on which restrooms transgender people can use.

The 2012 GOP platform said, "The Free Trade Agreements negotiated with friendly democracies since President Reagan's trailblazing pact with Israel in 1985 facilitated the creation of almost ten million jobs supported by our exports".
