Pokémon Go becomes biggest mobile game in U.S. history

The numbers which support the fact that Pokemon Go has become the most played game in United States history are finally out.

According to the unfortunately-named SurveyMonkey, the game that basically merges Google Maps with a scavenger hunt for animated characters with names like Muk, Sandshrew, and Snorlax already has almost 21 million daily active users.

Within 24 hours, the widely popular game reached number 1 on App Store beating out indie hit and Supercell's heavily promoted blockbuster Clash Royale to become the biggest game of 2016, according to the post. The Pokemon franchise has only ever been available on handheld Nintendo devices or Nintendo gaming platforms such as Nintendo 64, Gamecube or Wii.

The craze around the game is a huge step up from its humble beginnings as an April Fools joke launched by Google in 2014. It is for the first time that a virtual reality game has pulled people out of their homes and made them literally follow its trial.

"The expectation is that Pokemon Go's success will contribute to the success of Nintendo's other original games, and even to the success of its next game console", SMBC Nikko Securities analyst Eiji Maeda told AFP. While the game is free for download on all platforms, users can spend real money on "in-app" purchases (Pokemon GO microtransactions). The SuperData executive stated that the game's publisher and its developer may soon need to "face the retention figures after 7, 30 and 90 days".

It will be interesting to see what steps Niantic Labs - the company behind the smash-hit game - will take to retain the buzz.

Pokemon Go to break Snapchat's record too. The game was initially released was in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand in early July.
