Amber Alert issued for five-year-old Calgary girl, mother found dead

Calgary police say the mother of a missing 5-year-old girl, who is the subject of an Amber Alert, has been found dead.

Police issued the Amber Alert at 1:40 a.m. Tuesday. Her clothing is unknown, say police. "Contact the family, we will come and pick her up", Hamilton said as he choked back tears.

When they arrived at the scene, police found Marsman's mother dead in the home.

Marsman's whereabouts remain unknown at this time and police are speaking with witnesses and people of interest.

Taliyah's father is estranged from her mother, he said.

He said the couple had a "limited" history of domestic violence "both reported and unreported", but did not elaborate.

The young girl is described as having a slim build, curly brown hair and blue eyes. Coleman updated that "at this point, it's still early in the investigation" and "we're not ruling out anybody as a suspect, and we're looking at all avenues".

As most Calgarians were getting ready for work or a visit to the Stampede, Calgary police were explaining to reporters at a 7 a.m. news conference that Baillie's death is being investigated as a homicide, pending autopsy results.

Meantime, volunteers are handing out flyers featuring Taliyah's picture and description around the Panorama Hills neighbourhood.

Hamilton described Taliyah as "a vivacious, wonderful child, curious".

Coleman said family members last saw the girl Sunday morning.

Scott Hamilton described Baillie as a handsome young woman, who was "single-handedly" raising her daughter.

"We've lost a niece, a sister, a daughter, and a mother within the last 12 hours".

"Taliyah was Sara's world", he said.

"Taliyah referred to Sara as Mama and it wasn't necessarily like a mother-daughter relationship".

Hamilton said there will be no questions asked for her safe return and that they love and miss her and they just want her back. "I hope that little girl is ok", said Tania. "I'm really in shock".
