US Steel May Idle Plant, Citing Market Conditions

"SunCoke supplies coke to U.S. Steel's Granite City Works under a long-term, take-or-pay contract until 2025".

The U.S. Steel warned about 2,000 workers at its Granite City Works in Illinois that they could be laid off because of ongoing weakness in the steel market. The company will be working closely with its customers and will continue to operate its steelmaking operations in Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. These notices will be issued beginning on October6 and are separate from previously issued notices.

Among those fluctuations is the price of oil, which the company said was one of the factors playing into the potential idling of the Granite City facility.

U.S. Rep Rodney Davis, R-Taylorville, whose 13th District borders Bost's, also expressed disappointment.

Many workers at the US Steel plant in Granite City were issued a notice on Tuesday about the possible consolidation.
